Child Development II:
What are we learning? This week we are finishing talking about brain development and beginning to talk about intellectual development in toddlers ages 1-3. Why are we learning it? We are learning these things so that we can better function as children's caregivers in the future in both personal/professional sectors. How will I know I learned it? You will know you learned it when you pass quizzes and tests on the subject matter. Monday: Study with quizizz before parts of the brain quiz Parts of the brain quiz Discuss "Twilight of the lecture" article assigned last Friday as homework Review different types of development briefly with powerpoint(intellectual, social/emotional/physical); then play quizizz to assess understanding Tuesday: Day 1 Intellectual Development of Toddlers. Activity 1: Students will be responsible for reading Chapter 12, section 1 (12.1) in the course textbook; take notes as they read of main points, questions and things they don't understand Activity 2: Students will be assigned one portion of the entire 12.1 section. They are responsible for becoming “experts” on that section. They will be responsible for answering questions about that section in tomorrow’s class. Students will get together with all of the other experts of their assigned section in chapter 12.1. They will discuss together their understanding of the topic & go over key points they want to communicate with the rest of the class Wednesday: Day 2 of Intellectual Development of Toddlers. Activity 1: Students will be placed in discussion groups with experts from each section. Each expert will go through & explain the important parts of their section and answer any student questions related to their section. Discussion groups will raise their hands and ask any questions their experts could not figure out, and Ms. Jarvis will explain to them the concept. Activity 2: In discussion groups, they will come up with a minimum of 5 of the most important concepts/ideas from section 12.1. Ms. Jarvis will write down the important concepts/ideas from the chapter on the board while discussing with other students if it should be written down or not. Thursday: Day 3 of Intellectual Development of Toddlers: Activity 1: Socrative questions to gauge individual student understanding of most important concepts from the chapter that were came up with yesterday during class; If 70% of class shows adequate understanding of the topic we will move on to the next section, if not then we will go over the material in discussion groups more. Activity 2: Students will be responsible for reading Chapter 12, section 2 (12.2) in the course textbook. As they read, they will write down things they don’t understand and particular questions they have. (25 minutes) Friday: Intellectual Development of Toddlers Day 4 Activity 1: Students will be assigned one portion of the entire 12.2 section. They are responsible for becoming “experts” on that section. They will be responsible for answering questions about that section in tomorrow’s class. Activity 2: Students will get together with other experts & discuss what they believe are the main points of their section to prepare for Monday's class.

This week we are learning about the importance of early childhood education and beginning to talk about brain development. Why are we learning it? We are learning these things so that we have a better understanding of why taking this class is so important. How will I know I learned it? You will know you learned it when you pass quizzes and tests on the subject matter. Monday: Class debate: Daycare vs stay at home moms: what do you think is best for your child? KWL chart on "The Brain" Tuesday: Overview of early brain development using the "Developing Brain" Powerpoint Briefly go over different types of development (review from CD I) Minimalist Poster Project on Ways to Grow a Good Baby Brain Wednesday: Parts and functions of the brain power-point with notes; How a neuron works class activity utilizing movement Thursday: Pinky & the Brain clip on brain parts; Create a song to remember parts of the brain (with small groups) Friday: Finish Songs; Perform them for the class Create neural axons (from candy)! We are learning these things because they will help us be successful throughout the course. How will I know I learned it? You will know you learned it when you pass the syllabus quiz. Tuesday: Go over classroom rules and procedures, introduction to Ms. Swanson, Getting to know you activity Wednesday: Syllabus Quiz, Canvas assignments (discussion & All about me assignment); Review things learned in Early Childhood I Thursday: Brainstorm issues parents/children facing today; Class discussion over importance of early childhood education. Friday: Begin persuasive letter project; Due Monday |
