What are we learning?
This week we are continuing to work on our final restaurant concept project. Why are we learning it? We are learning this because doing this project and coming up with a restaurant concept, menu and pricing everything out will help to prepare us for starting our own business in the future or at the very least help us hone our sense of creativity and problem solving skills . How will we know we learned it? We will know that we learned it when we finish our project and receive an excellent grade on it. Monday: Continue to work on Final Project (for seniors) (suggested: Finish Logo/Restaurant Concept, Develop Menu) Tuesday: Continue to work on Final Project (for seniors) (suggested: Finish Menu, Begin pricing out menu) Wednesday: Continue to work on Final Project (for seniors) (suggested: Finish Pricing Menu, Begin Recipe Pricing) Thursday: Guest Speaker: Owner & Operator of Ono Pinay Kitchen in Bellevue to talk about their experience opening a restaurant and give advice to Students developing their restaurant Decide on fillings/type of chocolate for Chocolate Candy Lab tomorrow Friday: Chocolate Candy Lab

What are we learning? This week we are beginning to work on our final project as well as going over basics of service techniques and management practices in the hospitality industry. Why are we learning it? We are learning these things because they will help us be successful not only at home when we cook, but also if we choose to make a career out of our culinary skills. Having a mastery of preparing different types of dishes will overall lend to a future fruitful career in the industry. How will we know we learned it? We will know that we learned it when we are able to complete basic kitchen skills with ease during future labs. Monday: Introduce Restaurant Wars; Initial work day for the project Tuesday: Chapter 21 PowerPoint over Front of the house basics. Wednesday: 2nd work day for Restaurant Wars Project Thursday: Finish Chapter 21 PowerPoint Friday: Communication, creativity and critical thinking Skills Lab: Egg Roll! What are we learning?
This week we are learning about beginning our career including how to write a resume and coverletter. Why are we learning it? We are learning these things because they will help us be successful not only at home when we cook, but also if we choose to make a career out of our culinary skills. Having a mastery of preparing different types of dishes will overall lend to a future fruitful career in the industry. How will we know we learned it? We will know that we learned it when we are able to complete basic kitchen skills with ease during future labs. Monday: 1st activity: Brainstorm what do you need to know or what do you need to do in order to get a job? 2nd activity: Chapter 5 Powerpoint with note guide Tuesday: Activity 1: View examples of Good vs Bad Resumes; Discuss what makes them good vs bad. Activity 2: Pick one of advertised jobs, fill out the general application for it; Activity 3: Write a Resume for yourself (particularly one that will get you an interview for the advertised job). Wednesday: Activity 1: Discuss how to write a cover letter Activity 2: View examples of good vs bad cover letters and discuss why they’re good or bad Activity 3: Begin writing cover letter to go along with chosen job Thursday: Activity 1: Finish writing cover letter Activity 2: Begin Chapter 20: Management Essentials powerpoint with note guide Friday: No School What are we learning?
This week we are finishing our unit on communication and beginning our unit on beginning our career and management essentials. Why are we learning it? We are learning these things because they will help us be successful not only in the food industry but any industry as we are learning how to write a resume and cover letter and fill out an application for a job as well as essentials in not only management, but in leadership which is helpful in any future position we choose. How will we know we learned it? We will know that we learned it when we are able to write a resume and cover letter for a given position. Monday: Begin Filming Puff pastry episode of cooking show featuring habits of good communicators (make puff pastry dough again and film communication mishaps examples) Grocery order for puff pastry recipe Tuesday: Finish filming puff pastry episode of cooking show by adding ingredients to puff pastry & cooking it. Eat puff pastry recipes Wednesday: Finish film editing of cooking show Pretest over chapter 5: professional expectations Thursday: 1st activity: Brainstorm what do you need to know or what do you need to do in order to get a job? 2nd activity: Listen to video over powerpoint presentation for chapter 5 & take notes (begin writing down possible parts of you own resume while listening to resume section). If you don’t finish in class, finish the powerpoint at home. Friday: View examples of Good vs Bad Resumes. Discuss what makes them good vs bad.
